Writing Effective Web Content

The oft repeated phrase that ‘content is king’ has now become a cliché. Nevertheless, it is still true. If it were not for content, what would visitors look at when they visit websites? Of course, any old content won’t do. Your content has to interest visitors enough to bring them back to your website time and again.

More visitors translate into many positives for those who live in the virtual world. It could mean that visitors could be interested enough in buying your products if you have any listed on your website. It is also a mark of your credibility and popularity. Brevity – No one has the time to read longwinded articles. Make sure that your articles are short, sweet and convey the point effectively. Get across your message immediately without wasting too much time.

Summarise - It’s a great idea if you provide a short summary of your article at the beginning itself because it alerts your visitors about what to expect. Moreover, if your summary is good, they will follow through and read the entire article as well.

Design – Make sure that the design of your website is easy to navigate and does not exasperate visitors. In fact, it’s better to have a simple design that leads visitors to your content directly instead of a cluttered space which can confuse them unnecessarily.

Punchy text – Try to omit unnecessary words and verbiage from your content. Don’t write long sentences when a short one will do the needful. Make sure that your text is pithy and carries a punch.

Small sentences, small paragraphs – Try to make sure that your sentences and paragraphs don’t run on endlessly. Small sentences are easier to read and grasp. Small paragraphs look neat and do not tire the visitor.

Bullets, bold, italics – It doesn’t take a formatting guru to get these basics right. Make sure you use bullet points where necessary because it helps draw visitors in. It also helps them scan text easily. Bold and italics are also useful in emphasizing certain points.

Organised flow of thoughts – If you don’t want to confuse your readers, make sure you’re not confused yourself. Try to restrict a single thought to a paragraph. Also, avoid confusing readers by jumping from one topic to another.

Sparkling content – Anyone can write dull and plodding content. But who wants to read it? Make sure that your writing sparkles and try to personalise it by making readers laugh. They’ll definitely come back for more.
