The idea is to create a lasting impression in the minds of the customers that is
favorable and will not only lead to having that customer return but also generate
new sales through word of mouth. There is a number of ways that this can be accomplished.

You are not going to want to employ every method available. You do however want to
employ those methods that are going to work best for your particular business.
For example, if you run an internet business ensure that you have not just an
email but also a phone contact. This means that customers can reach a live person.

Consider things such as an answering service or call forwarding if possible. There
are some cases where it is not possible to employ this method but most people are
going to want to know they can reach a person if there is a need. Having trained
staff is essential when it comes to providing for customer retention or relationship
marketing and it is often left to the wayside, as companies need people on the job
as soon as possible.

The difficulty with this is that many people do not have the necessary skills to be
effective when it comes to customer service. These are learned behaviors, responses
and skills and without proper training, you could be unable to maintain or use
relationship marketing with your business. This is why if you are looking into
marketing using relationship marketing that you train your staff to handle all
customer service related issues on their level.

The ideal is not to only handle problems but deliver a level of customer service
that goes beyond just handling problems that come up. Relationship marketing is
about handling situations before they become problems and ensure that even a problem
free transaction is met with a high level of professionalism and courtesy. These
are things that customers remember and as a result, your research and development
in regards to marketing strategies should include steps necessary to incorporate
those elements.

It does not matter if you are working online or in a store with an actual physical
location and dealing with customers in a face-to-face manner. Customer service
and customer retention are a necessary and fundamental part of any type of marketing
plan and should be incorporated with its own set of strategies based on which types
of relationship marketing strategies work best for your business. Relationship
marketing is about creating a situation where you not only increase your profits
but also retain customers.
