That way you know the keyword or phrase is something others are typing into the search engines.

So let's say your keyword get 1200 searches a month, but that's only half the story. If there are millions of people searching the same keyword or phrase it is improbable you will show up on the 1st page anytime in the near future. So to find out how much competition there is for your keyword, go back to Google and put that keyword or phrase in the search box. When you search this, you want to look at the number of results that come up. You can obtain that information on the right side of the page towards the top. It will say something like "results 1-10 of 1,587,241". If you are just starting to marketyou want that number to be around 350,000-600,000.

If you follow these suggestions you will have a keyword that is getting sufficient searches, but is not too competitive yet. That, my friends is smart marketing research and most of your competition doesn't have a clue it even exists. Now the numbers I gave you aren't hard and fast, but a guideline for you to get started.
