The Difference Between Real PageRank and Toolbar PageRank

By: Cristian Lungu

Explaining the Duality of PageRanking

PageRank works by using an algorithm, (a set of formulae), to evaluate the popularity of any given website based on the amount of traffic landing on that site's landing page. A more technical approach defines PageRank as being a link analysis algorithm.

But PageRank is more complex than meats the eye... For starters there are two types of PageRank:
> First, there is the Real PageRank destined for Google use exclusively and...
> Secondly, there is the visible PageRank showing up with the PR Toolbar; this is used by webmasters and SEO developers to estimate Google's trust towards a given domain or webpage.

Although both variants operate on a numerical basis, the real PageRank is expressed with larger figures reaching even millions, as opposed to Toolbar PR with the tenth grade being the highest.

What the 11 level toolbar does is sort webpages from 0 to 10, according to the real page each accumulates after launching.

Looking at two web pages, where one has a PageRank of 2 and the other has 4, the difference is not merely 2. In real PageRank scoring, the difference is multiplied many times higher.

Regrettably, nobody actually knows exactly how Google works out the PR value of a web page or where the grades cross from one rank to the next.

Still, what we know is that the number of links required for going from a toolbar PR 3 to PR 4 value is Exponentially higher than going from 2 to 3 value. In other words, the amount of back links required to graduate between inferior levels is insufficient for advancing to superior appointing - starting with 4 and above.

Let’s take a look at a few key points to help to gel the understanding of PageRank analysis in your mind:

1. Google ranks web pages and not individual websites.

2. The values listed on the PageRank Toolbar coincide with a wide range of real PageRank. This means that the real PageRank values can differ greatly or be close together for two consecutive toolbar PR levels of 1 and 2, for example.

3. All things being equal,a considerable quantity of back links emanating from the same web domain will score lowly as fewer back links coming from different domains.

4. Each Webpage is borne with an initial PageRank valued at 0.15. The figure is given the formula (1-d), where d is called the "damping factor", with a value of 0.85.

5. To facilitate a web page getting to the high end of the toolbar register, one must consistently keep increasing the quantity of incoming links to one's site.

6. Every three months, the PageRank Toolbar is changed. In the meantime, the Real PageRank gets continuous updates, meaning that it is always more current. This explains why certain web pages appear higher in the search engine report pages than other web pages with higher figures. This highlights another difference in the dual nature of PageRank.

7. PageRank is a matter of web popularity - the more popular a page gets the more will be referenced through back links by (preferably) already trusted websites.

The way Google works: After stacking up a considerable number of web pages in its index, Google then rates these pages according to the trust and popularity they enjoy online - expressed by the number of links pointing back to them. Of course there are the on-page factors that should be considered, also.

How PageRank Flows. Short Notes::

- A web page is assessed and awarded a PageRank sore from the inbound links coming from other web pages.

- A link coming from a webpage within the same site or from webpages in different domains has the same ranking power as long as those pages have identical PageRank values.

- Linking out will not bankrupt your PageRank stock. In fact, Google encourages linking out to quality content resources and awards this practice with enhanced rankings.

- The amount of PageRank passed to other webpages is divided by the total number of outbound links leaving the page.

- Finally, due to the damping factor, an incoming link is maximized at 85% of its value.
