Recommended Reading: Handbook of Public Relations Writing by Thomas Bivins There are a lot of tools available to you when you are trying to promote your business for free: newsletters, press releases, brochures, press kits and more. When planning your public relations campaign, you need to start with a plan and decide which of the various public relations tools you want to use. The most simple, of course, is the press release, or news release. A press release is news about your business and should be written in a news format. It follows the inverted pyramid style of newspaper writing by including the 5 Ws (who what when where and why) and the How at the beginnning. Before you write, you need to decide what is news about your business. Then, write down the basic information listed above to help you write the first paragraph of your news release. You can then fill in background information about your business news and include contact information so that readers can contact you later. Remember, journalists receive 1000s of press releases every day. They are looking for releases that are not only interesting but include news, not just promotion for your business.
