Promotional product suppliers produce and sell products that are branded in order to promote a business. The same is true of company's sponsoring and supporting sports teams etc.

Then, every time someone comes round and uses that mug they too will think of that company (and maybe even stimulate a discussion about the mug, further cementing that association to more than a passing thought).
