Online reputation management can change the way you or your organization is perceived. Today, everybody looks up the internet for almost all information needs. Recruiters too do an online search on the background check on prospective employees, so do businesses worldwide. It is almost practically impossible for people to remember the URL of each and every website they visit, so they depend on search engines.

Now there are two possibilities that could harm your interest here. Firstly you could be confused with someone who has the same name as you and does not have a very good standing. Secondly, the information available about you on the web may not be very creditable. To deal with this, you require different strategies some of which are given in this article. However, this is in no way a substitute for reputation management services. You need professional help for the task. Knowing a little about reputation risk management will help you evaluate them better.

Strategy 1: Avoid Confusion

The root cause of the problem in Case 1 is that you are being confused for somebody else. It could be anyone, a Las Vegas playboy or a Harvard graduate who has the same name as you. So you need to make sure that your prospective employers identify you and only you. This issue has been discussed many times in reputation management conference and the solutions are startling and simple. They are cited below.

Use Your Middle Name: It is advisable to use your middle name or at least your middle initial in your online profile. This way you can reduce the probability of being confused for someone else. Although, this will not completely eliminate the chances, it is very unlikely that someone will have the same name as well as middle name as you.

Use Your Location: After you have used your middle initial or name, specify your location in the profile. This will almost reduce any chances of confusion.

Enter Membership Numbers: This one applies solely to corporate reputation management. If you are a member of a forum like the BBB or an association, mention the membership numbers. People will most likely start their search for you there and will be able to identify you better. They are most likely to click your link or read any posts on the BBB website, if you inform them about the same.

Strategy 2: Get Rid of Reputation Damage:

This is the difficult part in online reputation management. Sometimes there are not very good articles about you in the online press or media. These articles could be true or false. Both require a different strategy for online reputation management.

In the first case, you could just approach an association like Electronic Privacy Information Center (epic.org). They would help you.

Or alternatively you could go to an online reputation management specialist. They will help you supply Google new information about you. Most likely they will appear on the front pages and it is a known fact that most people will not look beyond three pages.

Online reputation management needs to be taken very seriously as it could severely make or mar your business prospects.
