Marketing To Multicultural Customers

The mishmash of cultures in America has paved the way for multicultural marketing. Today, influences of immigrants can be felt and seen in areas such as music, clothing, cuisine, and even in the choice of travel destinations.

Contemporary home vendors are consulting feng shui experts before an open house; tableware manufacturers offer Asian-inspired dishware; and the young generation getting hooked in Caribbean cocktails and glistening Indian slippers. Immigration has indeed influenced everything in this world, even more in marketing.

Take for instance certain villages in Africa. To them, house numbers, usually used to identify houses in America, serve no purpose. If you want to reach a certain person or household in their village, you would need to know their phone number. This method works and makes sense to them. If you are a business owner seeking to promote your business to the right group of customers, you would need to know information such as this. You have to be aware of the culture and practices of your target market and go from there. Among the information you need to identify from your prospective customers are:

• Personality. Research on the buying behavior of your target customers. Get feedback and adjust your marketing tactic to meet the personality of your customers.

• Age. Determining the age of your target market is important. As different age groups interact differently, knowing the characteristic of each group helps in creating a successful marketing ad.

• Habits. What do your target customers do often? What lifestyle do they have? Examine them, get feedback, and adjust your strategy to their practices.

After gathering the personal information you need to examine from your prospective customers, what do you do next? You design the promotional material that would best attract the customer you need. But developing a customer based material takes more than printing postcards, catalogs, and posters done professionally by commercial printing companies. It takes dedication and enthusiasm to adjust business tactics to meet the needs of the diverse market. How do you achieve this?

• Learn the language of your customers. Often, it’s not enough to simply know what culture or group your target customers belong to. It’s not enough to simply know that the customer is Asian. There are different languages spoken in Asia. If you want to target people belonging to diverse cultures, know and speak their language.

• Research about the culture. How can you build rapport with your customers when you don’t know anything about their culture? People have different look, background, and practices. If you show willingness to know about their culture, it would be easier for you to know how to saturate their market.

• Create business cards in different languages. If you want to be successful in getting lots of customers from other cultures, don’t forget to print business cards in the language they speak. For instance, one side of your card can be written in English and the other in their language. Just make sure to put the same design and color on both sides to remove the cultural inferiority issue. There are lots of online printing companies that would do this job for you at considerably low cost.

• Let them know how much you care. Don’t let your target customers feel that you are just after their paycheck. Educate them of your products and services and how can they get the most out of your products.

Marketing to different cultures can be exasperating, but if you know how to get this particular market segment, you get a tremendous advantage not only business-wise, but on the personal side as well. So, take a sincere interest in your customers and you’ll be surprised with what you’ll earn and learn from them.
