Is "Duplication" Leading You To Failure In MLM?

By: Wayne Wu

Every network marketer knows that MLM is a "business of duplication". In my opinion, this is responsible for the continued struggles of many network marketers. "Duplication" does NOT create a culture of teamwork, but rather dependency and downline management.

When I began my network marketing career in a giant of a company, I was enrolled on the monthly motivational CD training program. There was a CD titled "Duplication", a motivational speech by a well known leader in the company. I remember him saying "if it doesn't work for everybody, it doesn't work for anybody!"

The so called duplicable system was very traditional - make a list of friends and family, invite them to a meeting, give them some tools, and hopefully they get excited about the dream and want to sign up.

The process of building one's business was very formalised. It was all put together in an owners manual. What CD's to lend out were strategically sequenced. All manners of objections and their rebuttals were there when you needed them.

No one was to deviate from the set recipe. Being creative was a big no-no. You had to follow the system or you wouldn't get any support.

Did it work? No. The vast majority of distributors don't make any money.

They had a very inflexible approach to business building which simply did not work for most people. Any monkey could follow the step-by-step instructions, but hardly anybody could get results with it.

There are four temperaments of personality - Red, Green, Blue and Yellow. Every person is a mixture of the four, but one dominates over the other three - giving one a dominant behaviour. No one method or system will suit all four personality types. It's just not possible.

The traditional, make a list, tell and sell method will only work for one of the personalities: the Red, director, domineering, "get out of my way" person. But only 15% of the world's population are Reds. So the tell-all-your-friends business building approach just doesn't work for the vast majority of people.

The Red top earners who aren't building the business anymore tell their people that they must change their personality in order to have success. In my opinion, that's very bad advice. There's no need to change who you are. In fact, you'll have a lot more success and a lot more fun being yourself.

You might be using the internet to advertise to a targeted audience. The method you have chosen is in perfect alignment with your personality and you have fun doing it.

You've mastered this art, and through that activity, you have sponsored some keen, sharp people into your business.

But unfortunately, your newly sponsored reps don't yet feel comfortable marketing on the internet. Are you doomed to failure because they can't duplicate what you do?

The herd will cry "YES! You will fail because noboby can duplicate you!"

But here's the thing... Your people will never be able to duplicate you. Nobody has ever built a successful network marketing on their own. It takes teamwork. It's not about you! It's about you and your people working as a team to build something that's bigger than every individual can do on their own.

Just because someone came into your business through the internet, it doesn't mean they have to build their business the same way.

It's not about duplicating other people. It's about duplicating RESULTS. Don't be afraid to build your business in a way that works for you.

Don't be misled by the myth of MLM business duplication, you can have fun AND be successful. What would it feel like to build a profitable home based business? Click here to see a picture of what your boss will look like when you tell him "YOU'RE FIRED!"
