How to Keep your Business a Step Ahead of the Competition

By: Chelsea Nicole

If you are a first time entrepreneur, perhaps you’re overwhelmed with everything that has to be done—from choosing the right place to organizing your personnel and creating your marketing plan. In business, it doesn’t really matter what kind of products or services you offer. Everything is essentially the same in most businesses: how they are built, how they are made stronger, and how goals are reached. A set of principles are followed no matter how you built your business be it from scratch or you inherited it from someone else. Maintaining a successful business is a continuous process; whatever you do today will have an impact to how you do business in the future.

Here are pointers to help you build and maintain a strong and profitable business:

1. Stay ahead of the competition. As mentioned earlier, building and maintaining business is a continuous process. Just because you reached your primary goals and earn a considerable amount of profit means that you stop your efforts there. It is much important to double efforts to stay on top of the game. One good way to do this is to stay informed of the market. You can subscribe to trade magazines, brochure printing, or newsletters or even set up Google Alerts to keep up with the news with regards to your competitors.

2. Hire the right people. With the economy turning around, now is the best time to make the necessary adjustments. Getting the right manpower to help you update your business including your products and services will help you ride the market trend. You can consider hiring freelancers to help redesign your marketing materials such as your posters, flyers, and catalogs, without the risk of hiring full-time.

3. Rebuild your business image. Before things start to move in the market, it’s best that you are primed and geared up with the right strategies. Start rebuilding and improving your image through a new and fresh logo, simplified letterhead, or more chic marketing paraphernalia. Improving your business image helps attract new customers and keep old customers, so make the necessary change now.

4. Enhance customer communication. Acquiring new customers is hard enough, much more lose them. Nothing can be more frustrating than to lose loyal customers and have a hard time regaining them back. For this reason, it is important to keep communication with your old and new customers always open. Why not consider sending them postcards or greeting cards from time to time. You can include discount coupons or freebies in your cards to give customers a reason to contact you. This allows you to keep the communication line healthy and nurture your relationship with them.

5. Create materials that inform. In today’s highly competitive market, it doesn’t just require you to market your products or services, but provide customers with information as well. Don’t be in the marketing mode all the time. You should use your marketing materials to give customers informative and educational content. Keep them interested in your materials by giving them information they need. For instance, instead of simply putting sales info in your brochures, why not include articles and how-to tips in them before sending them to your brochure printer. This will surely encourage people to keep your brochure for future use.

So, if you want your business to stay nimble despite the downturn in the economy, follow the simple pointers above. If you are able to stay ahead of the pack no matter how hard the recession is, then you can be sure to keep your business profitable and successful for a long time.
