It is no secret that trying to be successful as an online retailer can be very difficult. There are literally millions of retailers on the web. With the ability to shop around the entire world for the best deal, it is even more important a business gets their name out there. The ability to set up an online store has become so simple that every household in America can do it relatively cheap. The competition to get noticed in a web search is fierce. Companies pay people to use just the right words to try and get their products at the top of a search engine. Advertising can be extremely expensive, and a company needs to use their advertising dollars effectively. The idea is to target people that are most likely going to purchase said products. In order to do so, the field needs to be narrowed down some. This is where the social networking sites come in.

With the explosion of social sites like Facebook and Twitter, it has added another way for a company to advertise. A person who signs up on Facebook can add an entire list of things that they are interested in. Their age, gender and location are also in the Facebook database. Now when a company wants to advertise for their target audience, they already have a pool of potential clients. Creating an ad to display on Facebook to the people who may be most interested, can save valuable marketing dollars. If a company is selling men’s watches, it makes sense to have an ad for men’s watches to pop up on a young male’s Facebook page.

The social sites also create a free way to advertise, by simply creating a company page or profile. These social sites are built on the idea of a person having friends, favorites and followers. One person adding a company page to their favorites or following the company, sets off a domino effect. That page is shown to all the followers of the person who added the company as a favorite. Then when one of their friends sees it and adds the company page it continues, on and on. Word of mouth advertising for absolutely free.

Once a company’s name and product get exposure by a small group of people, they will pass it around. The entire world has access to the internet. A company name has the potential to become a hip thing, by just one person on a social network deciding it is a cool place to shop. The company name and logo will get plenty of free exposure. The company name having a lot of followers will create a feeling of trust among potential buyers.
