Five Most Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

By: Rick Roberts

A lot of beginning Internet marketers use affiliate marketing as their jump off point to making money online. The biggest reason why it is a good starting point is because there can be absolutely zero startup costs associated with it. However, to be a successful affiliate marketer there are common mistakes to be aware of.

1. Not having a strategy or plan:
While affiliate marketing is so alluring to most beginners 95% of all affiliate marketers fail to break even or show any profits. Thus there is an enormous turn around in this area of Internet marketing. Why do so many fail? Simple, they blindly go into affiliate marketing with no strategy or plan for marketing.

Despite what you may have been told, it is not as easy as buying a domain name, putting up a blog and blogging your way to riches as some would have you believe. An effective marketing strategy involves a systematic plan or method of several areas of marketing avenues to include much more than just a simple website blog.

2. Sell the product or service, not the affiliate program:
Many times the new affiliate will get side tracked into thinking an easy route to making online riches as an affiliate would be to recruit more affiliates under them to do all of the marketing of the product or service.

This is also a viable means of making commissions but should not be the primary focus of the affiliate marketing plan. In reality an affiliate should dedicate the bulk of their marketing to the actual product or service and try to get affiliate recruits as a secondary objective.

3. Set yourself apart from the other affiliates:
Most all affiliate programs have a guided section of how they suggest an affiliate get started marketing their product. The most common mistake most affiliates make is following this guide to the letter and not adapting any of the suggestions to their own marketing style.

While having a guide line of how to market is great, one should always try to be unique in their own approach to the affiliate program's marketing suggestions. A great example of adapting the program's marketing resources to your own is to write a review of the product or service and advertise the URL to your review instead of linking directly to the product sales page.

4. Build a relationship with potential customers:
It is well known that on the average a potential customer usually has been exposed to advertising of a product between five to seven times before they take the plunge and purchase. Many new affiliate marketers do not know this statistic.

The absolute best way to develop a relationship with potential customers is by utilizing an autoresponder service to stay in contact with the potential customers. Incorporating an opt-in subscription to making more information about the product accomplishes the task of reminding the subscriber of the product.

5. Sell yourself first, then promote the product:
The affiliate marketer needs to show that they are genuine and concerned about the potential customers needs. Proving that your main priority is to making sure the customer will benefit from the product or service should be top priority.

An affiliate marketer should always be able to prove to the customer that you are watching out for them by recommending the product or service. Showing examples of how using the product has helped the affiliate goes a long way to convincing a potential buyer. Offering assistance after the sale in the form of an email address for support is a big plus in making a decision to buy. Affiliates should never over look this.

In Summary:

The previous listed five points are but a few of the things a beginning Internet marketer should always keep in mind. There are several facets to affiliate marketing that can not be covered in this article. But by understanding the concepts behind these five points will significantly increase your chances for success as an affiliate marketer.

The goal to strive for is not not be in the 95% that fail to show profit, but rather be in the top five percent that do make a success out of their online marketing career.
