Choosing Keywords That Work

By: Jeff Alderson...

Selecting keywords for website optimization can be a daunting prospect indeed. If some tricks and tips are employed, however, even a new web publisher can craft a fairly good list of relevant words to build copywriting campaigns around.

Researching keywords prior to creating a lot of content for a website is an absolute must if optimization is desired though. Although it's possible to insert keywords after the fact, it can be a royal pain in the neck that results in stilted copy.

As you go about the process of picking the right keywords, there are several things to consider. The first thing to remember is that different people use search engines in different ways. The key here is to consider the many ways of saying the same thing. How a person searches can be impacted by gender, age, country of origin, profession and so on. What terms come to mind for the exact same product or service can vary greatly depending on the person in question.

Make sure to choose only those keywords that are relevant to your site. Sure, you can get traffic with loaded keywords, but the practice is a bit dishonest. Plus, it can turn visitors off, decrease sales potential and it might even result in those who advertise on your site (if you have ads) becoming dissatisfied with the results.

As you start the process, the first thing to do is pick up a pen and piece of paper. Brainstorm every word and phrase you can conjure that web surfers might use to visit pages that relate to your topic. Ask others for their ideas, too, especially if friends, family or co-workers happen to fall into your target demographics.

With a keyword list ready to go, it's wise to now visit the Internet to refine it. You can use search engine databases to see what words others use to find sites similar to yours. Overture and Google both have keyword tools, and software like Ad Word Analyzer can save you a ton of time on keyword research. All of these tools can assist you in seeing how many similar sites come up on searches when your keywords and phrases are plugged in.

It is now a very good idea to really consider the targeted audience. Consider the words on your list that these folks would actually use to find your site. Cross off those that don't fit. Remember, conversational language is more common in searches than advertising or marketing jargon. Short phrases that are quite basic are generally the best.

Once you have a solid list refined and revised, it is wise to keep in mind that no optimization goes smoothly on the first go around. This process is generally an ongoing evolution. Search trends change, and your products, services or focus might, too.

Now's the time to take what you've learned and craft copy that is keyword rich and relevant. Avoid stuffing keywords in just to get them in and make sure copy is only used where it's useful. Don't try to overload the site unless it's designed to be content rich. Remember, product descriptions, blog articles, news stories and so on that are relevant and offer real information tend to pull in more traffic. Also, don't forget to use the keywords in article or page titles.

Setting out to choose the right keywords for a website can be a scary proposition. If it's taken as an ongoing process, the effort won't seem as difficult.
