Blog Settings You Need To Adjust Because They're Hurting You

By: Gail L Ramberg

You should already be aware of blogging basics so you're about to start getting traffic off of your your blog. You already know you need to decide on your content topic, focus on keyword density, write the post and publish it, ping it to the social marketing and bookmarking sites and send it to the people on your list. Then Google, etc discover your blog, move you up in their SEO hierarchy and you'll get millions of people to your site within hours. If only it really worked that fast. But do you know that a few of your blog settings can be negatively impacting your SEO, and make it harder to generate traffic?

I'm going to talk about several of the concerns with the settings on your blog that you will want to check so that you're getting the most out of your blog as you can.

Permalink Settings

Most blogs come out of the box using numbers for the end of the permalink. i.e. domainname.com/?7890 Do you know how crucial these numbers are to Google? They mean absolutely nothing. You need to modify this so your targeted keyword (that obviously should be part of the title of the post) becomes the permalink ending. Your blog settings need to be updated so that the name of the post replaces the numbers. Pay attention - if you already have a blog you will need to add a new plugin before you change your settings. The John Goodley plugin Redirection will allow you to reassign your older permalinks to the SEO improved links. When viewing the permalinks (that will be the title of the post) you will also want to streamline it. The major search engines are partial to simple permalinks so you will want to take out all of the short, general words. You should end up with a short permalink, has your keyword in it & makes sense to the reader.

Canonical URL

Are you aware the Google, etc. can regularly think you have two different (but the same) sites? You can access every site on the internet 2 different ways. You can include the "www" or skip it by using http://. The major search engines believe these are two different sites. I hope you already know this is a very bad thing. Don't you need each of your links and visitors to show up on a single website instead of splitting up between the two? Obviously it's pretty essential that this is fixed. Using Google Webmaster is one option. You just tell them whether you want to use the www or not. Another option for you is a plugin to make everything point to one site The plugin I mentioned above (Redirection) can handle this.

Duplicate Content You Didn't Know About
Almost all blogs have come with settings and the notion that you want readers to find information on your site as many different as possible. Readers love this - search engines hate it. In addition to the name of the post, blogs also usually search by author, title tags category and date. Search engines will look at this as the same content. This is a very bad thing. To keep these options available to your readers, you can update your setting. You just need to let Google, etc know that these pages should not be indexed. A plugin by Joost DeValk (Install Robots Meta) will do this if your blog theme won't let you.

These are only a couple of your settings you will want to check when your blog is set up. There are many more, but I've run out of space. Make sure you look for these. Find them and then fix them and get more out of your blog marketing... automatically.
